The following are just a sampling of the many false claims now being used by HSUS to mislead people about Proposition 12
HSUS statement and image:
“Farm animals in the veal industry are some of the most abused animals in California.”
FACT:
Like most other Prop 12 promotions, this is fraudulent. As HSUS is fully aware, veal crates haven’t existed in California for decades. Yet, they use outdated photos, taken out of state, in order to mislead California voters.
HSUS statement and image:
“Voting Yes On Prop 12 will establish better farm animal welfare in California!”
FACT:
Prop 12 has absolutely nothing to do with beef cattle, or any other California farm animal other than egg-laying hens. And those hens, under Prop 12, will receive far less space – and more years of cages – than promised by the Prop 2 campaign.
HSUS statement and image:
“Prop 12 would ensure that substandard, inhumane, and unsafe products from these cruel confinement systems aren’t sold in California.”
FACT:
These are DAIRY COWS at their milking stations. Nothing in Prop 12 has anything to do with milk production, dairies, or cows.
HSUS statement and image:
“Factory farms using extreme animal confinement produce enormous amounts of animal waste, Prop 12 will help keep our waterways clean.
FACT:
Repealing Proposition 2 and replacing it with the hen-housing guidelines of United Egg Producers has nothing to do with protecting waterways!
HSUS statement and image:
“Every day, an enormous amount of waste is produced from factory farming that ends up polluting waterways in California. This measure will ensure more protection for the environment.”
FACT:
Accepting the cruel allotment of one square foot per hen — and legalizing the use of cages until at least 2022 — does NOTHING to protect California rivers, air, and public health. Further, the facility shown here as an example of factory farming is downright quaint compared to the monstrous factory farm complex being built by Prop 12’s main beneficiary — Central Valley Eggs. (Please see the the Central Valley Egg photo at the top of this page for comparison.)
HSUS statement and image:
“A Yes Vote on Prop 12 means baby cows used for veal will no longer live in extreme confinement in California.”
FACT:
A) This is a young dairy cow – not a veal calf.
B) There haven’t been veal calf crates in California in decades.
C) Female dairy calves, however, can still be kept in crates under Proposition 12.
HSUS statement and image:
“Independent animal welfare experts agree extreme animal confinement causes physical and mental suffering. Proposition 12 will ensure farm animals in California have highest legal space requirements”
FACT:
A) This is a sow in a gestation crate. There haven’t been gestation crates in California for more than a decade.
B) Nothing in Prop 12 affects California’s pigs in any way.
C) Prop 12 would not create the highest legal standards for farm animals. For example, Massachusetts recently passed a ballot measure which would provide hens with 50% MORE cage space than Prop 12 calls for.
HSUS statement and image:
“Together we can give a cruelty-free life to farm animals in California like these piglets have!”
FACT:
Proposition 12 has absolutely nothing to do with California piglets — nor piglets anywhere else in the country.
Piglets are, however, cute. And like photos of veal calves, they are constantly being used to mislead voters about Proposition 12.
HSUS statement and image:
“This measure promotes better animal welfare for farm animals in California.”
FACT:
Nothing in Proposition 12 has anything to do with either beef, dairy, or veal calves in California.
HSUS statement and image:
“Pigs are intelligent and social animals. Bar biting is common as a result of the physical and mental suffering caused by extreme confinement. This measure will ban the sale of pork from facilities that use cruel crates.”
FACT:
This is not a gestating sow in a gestation crate. This is a young pig being raised for pork. It is confined in an overcrowded pen with many others. Proposition 12 has nothing to do with bar-biting piglets or ANY piglets anywhere in the nation. This standard method of raising pigs has absolutely nothing to do with Prop 12. The “extreme confinement” of the animals shown here will continue unabated – but the public will be led to believe otherwise.
HSUS statement and image:
“Pigs are playful and loving animals! Together we can prevent farm animal cruelty in California!”
FACT:
Nothing in Proposition 12 will affect ANY California pig in any way.
HSUS statement and image:
“On many corporate factory farms, hens, pigs, and calves are locked in cages so small they’re rendered virtually immobile for their whole lives…[it] is crucial to prevent cruelty in California.”
FACT:
Like many of the images HSUS uses to deceive people about Prop 12, this photo is decades old and was NOT taken in California. Absolutely nothing in Prop 12 makes any change whatsoever regarding the treatment of calves in California.
HSUS statement and image:
“This measure would prohibit baby cows from being unable to turn around or lie down comfortably.”
FACT:
There haven’t been veal crates in California for decades. But female dairy calves are allowed to be raised in crates under Proposition 12.
HSUS statement and image:
“This measure will ensure animals in California are not locked in cages so small that they can barely move. Independent animal welfare experts agree extreme confinement causes physical and mental suffering.”
FACT:
There haven’t been gestation crates in California for more than a decade.
Nothing in Prop 12 affects California’s pigs in any way.
HSUS statement and image:
“California prides itself on its beautiful environment, a Yes Vote on Prop 12 would protect rivers, air, and public health.”
FACT:
Repealing Prop 2 and accepting the allotment of only one square foot per hen and legalizing the use of cages until at least 2022 does nothing to protect California rivers, air, and public health!
